Joint Pain Relief With Yoga For Senior Citizens


For people suffering with joint pain it is often difficult to find an exercise program that is more beneficial than detrimental. Senior citizens often have an even tougher time finding a program that is a good fit for their needs. There are many Yoga instructors that are developing programs geared specifically to fit this scenario. "Why has this 5,000-year-old Eastern discipline grown so popular? The simple reason is that it 'works,'" according to American Yoga Association spokesperson Millicent Kennedy, who has been taught and practiced yoga for the last three decades.

There are many different types of yoga, as well as variations through each instructor. Many people find that they need to try several different styles before they find one that fits their ideals of activity level, instructor personality, and over all comfort.

When first beginning yoga it is normal to feel some pain; every person has their own levels of pain tolerance. It is a good idea to avoid any movement that causes more pain than might be experienced throughout a normal day. Although there can be pain associated with yoga, it generally should not last more than a couple of hours. If pain persists beyond a few hours, a modification in routine is probably a good idea.

For most people, two or more sessions a week can make a significant difference in joint pain. By choosing to attend an actual class with an instructor present, it is possible to find ways to modify postures to work for each individual. Although there are endless choices when it comes to yoga DVDs or books, nothing can replace a knowledgeable instructor in a hands-on situation. This is especially beneficial when first participating in a new exercise program.

The reason that yoga works so well is that is it basically a gentle form of exercise. The postures used may feel awkward at first but become easier as they become more familiar. Joint pain, inflammation, and even stiffness and swelling can be relieved through this form of exercise. There are several types of postures, all of them with different goals. Some of these stances focus on strength, flexibility, deep breathing, or relaxation. The postures that focus on flexibility are an excellent choice that can help to increase range of motion in painful joints. Instructors can help to modify postures so that there is not too much pressure or torque on the joint.

Supplements can be a big boost to a yoga program. Many people living with joint pain have found relief through CFAs, or cetylated fatty acids. This substance is especially beneficial in combination with yoga, as it has been shown to help relieve inflammation and increase range of motion. Dog Arthritis - Common Types of Arthritis in Dogs


Dogs can suffer from different kinds of arthritis, which literally means inflammation of the joints. The most common form of arthritis in dogs is osteoarthritis or canine arthritis. Dogs are more prone to arthritis than in cats or horses and can usually take one of the several forms:

Osteoarthritis - A slow, progressive disintegration of cartilage in your dog joints is called osteoarthritis and is a chronic degenerative joint disease. When the cartilage of a joint is worn away the adjoining bones begin to rub against one another causing muscle discomfort and joint pain.

Hip Dysplasia - A malformation of the hip sockets is called hip dysplasia. Hip dysplasia is most common among larger breeds of dogs.

Elbow Dysplasia - Another form of dysplasia is found in the elbows usually of large breed dogs. This disorder is typically hereditary in nature. In elbow dysplasia the bones become misshapen causing chipping with use resulting in discomfort and pain. An animal suffering from this condition will display lameness in the affected leg.

Knee Dysplasia - This malformation of the joints can also be found in the knees. Knee dysplasia also has the same "bone chips" which cause pain and lameness as it progresses.

Stifle Knee - A common problem with the stifle joint (knee) involves torn ligaments which creates instability of the joint. Joint dislocation is a common complication of the stifle knee. The stifle joint is placed under tremendous use and strain making inflammation at this location common. Poor or irresponsible breeding practices are the greatest reason for these issues.

Osteochondrosis - Inflammation of the cartilage or osteochondrosis is directly linked to poor breeding. Inadequate nutrition can also exacerbate this condition. The symptoms of osteochondrosis include pain and inflammation, and is coupled with cartilage disintegration.

Kneecap Dislocation - When the kneecap repeatedly moves and pull out of it's proper joint position it is known as kneecap dislocation and is associated with leg bones that are poorly formed. Again, this is a condition resulting from poor breeding or genetic inheritance.

Dog Joint Pain Caused by Arthritis


Signs of pain in a canine are not always pronounced, but there are signs that will help you discover that the dog is suffering from dog joint pain, if you know what those signs are.

Certain breeds of dogs are more prone to having joint problems as they get older, and other dogs may experience joint discomfort due to an injury or arthritis.

Joint pain may not be noticed when it first starts, but after awhile, the owner notices that the dog is acting differently. At first, the dog will have a slow day, and then will be more active the following day, and then maybe a week later, slows again; the owner will once again see the dog is acting differently, this time raising a caution flag.

If a dog always lies on the couch and this is the dog's favorite spot, one may observe the dog approach the couch, and then in slow motion, get onto the couch. The dog might even try a scoot method to avoid lifting the hind legs.

They will use the front legs as leverage, literally pulling the hind legs onto the couch to avoid pain. Another sign is the hunched look. When the dog walks, it may look like the hind legs are closer together, taking baby steps, and the rear part of the dog is almost into a hunched position.

To avoid the joint pain, a smaller step will replace a full flex of the hind leg. Observe the dog when they try to make a circle or turn, one may notice that they almost hop to complete the circle, or instead of a tight turn, they will make the turn around by walking in a larger circle.

This action is from hip pain in the rear joints that the dog is avoiding by walking or turning, and meanwhile trying to keep the weight off of the hind quarters. An owner may even think that the dog is constipated, because of the stiff hind quarters and lack of movement in that area.

The best way to determine what is causing the pain is to have a veterinarian do an x-ray of the joints. It can be from the hip bone being a flatter joint bone, as opposed to having a curve to keep the joint in place. This would then allow the joint to freely move within that area.

The best way to give a good example is: cup your left hand, then make a fist with the right hand, now place your fist into the cupped hand. That resembles a joint. Now flatten or open the left hand while keeping the fist, see how with the extra room the joint floats and does not stay in one place.

There are several different causes of why the family pet is experiencing dog joint pain. Have a vet examine the dog, and do an x-ray to determine the exact cause of pain; nobody enjoys pain, including the dog.

Hip Pain...How To Deal With Hip Pain.

How I personally dealt with Hip Pain.

It is true to say that as we enter our mid-years, the 50s and 60s, our bodies have taken quite a bit of punishment. In this article I shall home in on Hips. In later articles I shall write about other problems.

My 22 years spent in the Royal Marines were entirely physical, 30 mile marches, parachute training, mountain climbing and so on. Little did I know that all this" impact" activity was building up a load of trouble for me.

I am telling you this as a warning; you must be aware that if you are into any kind of sport such as running, jogging, basketball, or any other activity that involves jarring your body you are storing up a load of problems which will not manifest themselves until later years.

It is the Hip Joints and knees that take the brunt of this impact activity and because they do they are the first to break down. Having said this, impact sports are not solely responsibly for the wear and tear of the joints. Genetics, malnutrition, illness and obesity all play their part in causing joint problems.

The first symptom I experienced was a pain in my groin, (this was some 10 years before I was subjected to surgery) this lead in time to my having difficulty in picking things up from the floor. It never occurred at this stage that my hips were becoming arthritic Then my knees began to cause problems so I strapped them up, went for physiotherapy, rubbed in anti-inflammatory gel, all to no avail. I leant later that there was nothing wrong with my knees, I was suffering from what is known as referred pain. After my Hips operation my knees were fine

Out of interest I swotted up on all things relating to osteoarthritis. This is interesting; the bodies of young people below the age of 30 have the ability to regenerate cartilage. It is beyond this age that the cartilage, or "cushion" protecting the hip and knee joints, begin to wear out. But this is also interesting;these protective" cushions" are some 20 times more slippery than ice but as wear and tear sets in the lubrication diminishes and the cartilage gets thinner. So much so in my case that the ball and socket joints in my hips were working bone on bone, very unpleasant.

Whilst osteoarthritis is considered a disease of the elderly, as I think I said before, the onset can take place in the mid 50s. So if you even suspect that something is amiss, a stiffness, an ache in the groin,the onset of pain that causes you to limp or drag your leg, make an appointment to see your doctor who will hopefully send you for an xray.

The operation to replace an arthritic joint is fairly routine. An epidural to start things off and then the discarding of the ball joint to be replaces with a plastic or stainless steel unit.

The Hip ball and socket joint has the greatest range of movement of all the weight-bearing joints it is important, therefore, to strengthen the thigh muscles after the operation principally to hold the new appendage in place. Physio is the order of the day and do not
cross your legs. Profession will be from a walking frame, to crutches, to a walking stick, to jiving.

Non-impact exercises such as yoga, cycling, swimming and palates are all very good. I walk four maybe five miles two or three times a week.

At the risk of putting a damper on things I read an article in the national press recently, written by a Swiss doctor, that taking Glucosamine and
Chondroitin have no effect whatever on damaged cartilage.

Tip of the day:

Pour boiling water over a handful of basil leaves. The eugenal oil in the plant appears to block the effects of an enzine called cyclo-oxygenase which triggers inflammation and pain.

Migraine - Or is Nerve Damage Causing Your Headache?


Millions of people suffer from headaches. This often causes missed work days. less productive days, and less enjoyable days. Migraine is a specific intracranial vascular headache. Many use the term mistakenly to describe other types of headaches. There are many other causes of headache and many of these can be caused by nerve dysfunction.

The occipital nerve is a large nerve in the neck. It can be damaged by such things as whiplash injuries and improper patient positioning during oral surgery. Occipital neuralgia causes pain in the back of the head but this can be referred to other areas. This is because the ganglion interconnects with the trigeminal ganglion in the brain stem. Throbbing is often associated with this type of headache because of proximity to the occipital artery.

The auriculotemporal nerve is located near the ear and the top of the jaw on both sides. Common headaches with problems to this nerve are temple headaches. This nerve is commonly damaged in TMJ surgery. it is usually pounding because it is near the temporal artery.

Another nerve that can cause problem is compression of the ethmoid nerve in the sinuses. An ear nose and throat doctor can diagnosis this problem by seeing if the patient has tenderness when using the instrument commonly used to explore the sinuses.

Another type of neuralgia that can be found involves the supraorbital nerve and can be caused by a head hitting a windshield or a punch to the front of the head. Treatment and diagnosis involves injection of local anesthetic with steroid. The headache can sometimes take years before it starts to present problems.

The infraorbital nerve can also cause problems and is often misdiagnosed as maxillary sinusitis.

Nerve problems causing headaches are different than migraines and need to be treated as such. Diagnosis is made by injection of local anesthetic into the nerve that seems to be the problem. Treatment is directed at reversing the underlying pathology. Entrapments are treated with injectable anti inflammatory medications. Always remember you can't treat what you can't diagnosis. Patients as well as doctors need to be proactive in finding a potential source for chronic headaches.

Other Contributing Risk Factors for Health


Obesity

Obesity is not conducive to increased longevity because it is a strain on the heart and a precursor for many of the modifiable risk factors that promote cardiovascular disease. The national institutes of health (NIH) has summarized the data that were collected before 1985 on the relationship between obesity and health. The results indicated that obesity is highly related to increased sickness and death. Studies since 1985 have confirmed the NIH results. This section concentrates on the relationship between obesity and cardiovascular disease.

The health risks associated with obesity were summarized by the national task force on the prevention and treatment of obesity. Some of the conclusions generated by their analysis of all studies completed before 1994 are as follows:

1. There is a strong positive association between obesity and abnormal blood fats hypertension, and excessive production and secretion of insulin by the pancreas. These factors lead to the increased likelihood of coronary artery disease and type II diabetes mellitus.

2. Obesity increases the risk for certain types of cancer, degenerative joint disease, sleep apnea, gout, and gallbladder disease.

3. The relative risk for the conditions mentioned previously increases markedly in young adults. Obesity in adolescent boys was associated with increased mortality as long as 50 years later regardless of body weight status as adults. Of young people ages 12 to 19, 21 % are overweight. 32 teens spend approximately 22 hours per week watching television and playing video and computer games.

4. The economic cost attributed to obesity related illness is estimated to be in excess of $39 billion annually.

Diabetes Mellitus

Diabetes mellitus is a metabolic disorder in which the body cannot make use of sugar as a fuel. The hormone insulin must be produced and secreted into the bloodstream so that blood sugar can be transported into the cells. The cells have receptor sites to which insulin attaches, making the cell amenable to the entrance of sugar.

In type i diabetes, no insulin is produced, thus it must be injected daily. Type 1, referred to as insulin dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM), usually occurs early in life. Type II, or non insulin dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM), occurs in middle aged, overweight, sedentary adults. Excessive weight is a factor because it increases cellular resistance to insulin so that it takes more insulin than normal to effect the passage of sugar from the blood to the cells. On the other hand, exercise decreases insulin resistance so that cellular membranes become more permeable to sugar. About 90% of all diabetes mellitus is of the type II variety.

Diabetes mellitus has numerous long range complications. These primarily involve degenerative disorders of the blood vessels and nerves. Diabetics who die prematurely are usually the victims of cardiovascular lesions and accelerated atherosclerosis. The incidence of heart attacks and strokes is higher among diabetics than nondiabetics. In fact, diabetes increases the risk of coronary artery disease by two to three times the normal rate in men and three to seven times in women.

The arteries supplying the kidneys, eyes, and legs are particularly susceptible to atherosclerosis. Kidney failure is one of the long term complications of diabetes. Diabetes is also the second leading cause of blindness in the united states. Impaired delivery of blood to the legs may lead to gangrene, necessitating amputation of the affected tissues. In addition to circulatory problems, degenerative lesions in the nervous system lead to multiple neuropathies that result in dysfunction of the brain, spinal cord, and peripheral nerves. Unfortunately, medical science has been unable to identify the biological mechanisms responsible for these long term vascular and neural complications. However, these complications can be mitigated by leading a balanced, well regulated life, thereby keeping diabetes under control. Control includes dietary manipulation, exercise, weight control, rest, and medication if needed.

The landmark physician's health study was the first major effort to show that exercise reduced the risk of developing type II diabetes. 33 The physicians who exercised vigorously five or more times per week had a 42% reduction in NIDDM compared with those who exercised less than one time per week. The reduction in risk was particularly pronounced among those at the greatest risk the obese. The researchers concluded that at least 24% of all cases of NIDDM were related to sedentary living.

Tips For Recovering From Total Hip Replacement


After your total hip replacement surgery using the anterior approach, expect to stay in the hospital for at least 2 to 3 days. You will likely be in moderate pain for about a couple of weeks when walking after the surgery but you will receive medication if you need it. You can shower with your stitches because they have a protective film on it. They will eventually get absorbed into the skin tissue. Using a v-shaped pillow while you're lying down will help keep the new hip aligned and reduce strain. Walking and light mobility are very important to your continued recovery and will begin either the day of or the day after your surgery. With the anterior approach you won't need to do any physical therapy. You won't have any restrictions on movements either.

Complications and Warning Signs

Serious complications following hip replacement surgery are very low. About 2 percent of patients suffer from complications such as joint infections, heart attack or stroke caused by blood clots after major surgery. Any chronic illness would, of course, increase the potential for more complications and increase recovery time. Mobility and physical therapy help decrease the chances of blood clots and other clotting disorders that may lead to heart attack, stroke or painful blood clots.

Other rare complications may include dislocation, bleeding, stiffness, fracture or damage to the nerves and blood vessels. Lingering pain that is not eased by pain medications should be reported to your doctor. Over time the artificial joints, just like real joints, will show signs of wear and tear. Breakthroughs in prosthetics over the last few years have reduced the possibility of artificial joints wearing out, but it's still a very small possibility.

Recovering from Total Hip Replacement

The first few weeks after your surgery are the most important weeks. They will have the greatest impact on the success of your full and timely recovery.

Loss of appetite is a very common post-surgery occurrence. Don't let it worry you overly-much. Eat a well-balanced diet and supplement with vitamins if you aren't getting the recommended nutrients. Drink plenty of fluids to prevent dehydration and promote proper healing. Fluids are very important to both skin and muscle health. During the first several weeks, it is very important to keep up your strength, maintain hydration and exercise your new hip joint.

Normal physical activity should be resumed right away with no restriction in the movements. Your doctor will give you a list of exercises and stretches that will gradually get you back into your normal daily routine. Specific exercises performed several times per day will help restore movement and strength.

Causes of Jaw Pain When Chewing


Jaw pain is varying harrowing because it causes excessive discomfort while chewing. When you have excessive pain you should not wait for finding out the real cause. You should attend to the problem immediately. There are several reasons why the jaw pains when we chew.

TMJ disorders are the types of disorders that affect the joints and the muscles present in the jaw. So while chewing the jaws hurt because these muscles are connecting the entire jaw. Are you wondering what is TMJ? Temporomandibular Joint Disorder, is a disorder that affects the jaw joints that are located on each side of your jaw just before the ear. Your Pain Isn't Coming From Your Hip or Low Back - It's Coming From Your Sacroiliac Joint


It is not unusual to have a pain that seems to be vaguely found in the hip and lower back region. The pain is neither found in the hip area of the upper leg nor is it in the middle of the spine in the lower back. When asked to point to it most people will locate an area at the top of the buttock where is a bony bump. This is an area called sacroiliac joint (abbreviated S.I. Joint) and it is the source of many people's complaints. One study showed it to be the source of 23% of lower back pain.

The sacroiliac joint is actually a joint in the pelvis between the sacral bone and the iliac bone. There is one on each side of the pelvis. The S.I. joint acts as a "sliding or gliding" joint that moves with each step. It carries a lot of the weight of the upper body and is a common source of pain.

Known as degenerative joint disease, osteoarthritis is one of the most common forms of arthritis. It is defined by the loss of cartilage, a material found in the joints. Symptoms Caused By Osteoarthritis

Over time, however, the loss of cartilage becomes significant, which can cause several symptoms. The most common among them is joint pain. In severe cases of the disease, surgery may be recommended. A surgeon may attempt to realign the bones to reduce pressure (called osteotomy). Or, the joint may be replaced (total arthroplasty); this is primarily done when there is substantial cartilage erosion in the hips or knees.

It's estimated that seven out of ten people over the age of 70 show signs on x-rays or MRIs of osteoarthritis. Although there is no cure for the disease, it can be treated.

There no clear reason for TMJ but most dentist and TMJ Specialist say that the problem is usually related to the jaw alignment muscle or the temporomandibular joint.

Have a family member or your spouse to let you know if they hear these sounds while you are asleep and if they do then this is a good reason to seek a TMJ Specialist.

• Headache - This is one of the most common complaints from a TMJ patient. Reported to be at least 80% of the patients with TMJ. Opening and closing the mouth contributing to facial pain and sensitivity to cold is another prominent complaint of the TMJ patient.

Shoulder Pain: A Careful Look at Your Job Tasks and Their Effects on the Shoulder


For most people, pain and tension in the body are daily experiences. There are several non-work factors that affect the body and the body's vulnerability to injury, like age, daily activity, and stress. However, shoulder pain is frequently a result of work-related activity, and it is not always so obvious.

Certain pains are easy to connect to work-related causes, like neck and low back conditions. However, shoulder pain is frequently a result of work-related activity, and it is not always so obvious. This is for two main reasons: the relationship between the neck and shoulders, and some activities don't seem as harmful as they are. In an extensive study published by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), it was found that the relationship between shoulder activity on the job and shoulder pain was too strong for non-work factors to be the reason for pain. The shoulder is influenced by a variety of movements and postures, and can result in several acute or chronic conditions if not treated properly.

The shoulder is complex not only because of its range of motion, but also because of its connection to the neck and arms. The rotator cuff muscles are the most recognized source of shoulder pain, but the trapezius and deltoids are often involved when the shoulder is either moving or stabilized. A frustrating experience to have is when pain is not eliminated through manual manipulation (like massage.) This indicates that the source of pain is not where the pain is felt. For example, the scalenes, located on the side of the neck and move the ear to the shoulder, may be taxed in activities that primarily affect the neck and not the shoulders. However, problems in the scalenes very commonly produce pain in the shoulder and arm. As a result, people whose work involves only minimal shoulder movement may not connect shoulder pain with work activity.

The work-related movements most greatly contributing to shoulder pain are repetitive motion and posture. The greater the angle of the arm to the shoulder (think overhead work) and weight of object lifted, the greater the risk of injury. Similarly, the more repetitive the shoulder movement is, the better the odds are of developing a shoulder condition. Interesting, though, is the risk of shoulder condition to tasks that have minimal repetition. In some cases, low-repetition tasks are more damaging to the shoulder because the muscles are still working to stabilize the joint. Static postures, or holding the shoulder in one position for an extended period of time, lead to cell death and limited circulation that cause fatigue and wear on tendons and muscles. Over time, this can create pain and limited range of motion that impedes the ability to perform basic tasks involving shoulder movement.

Pain and dysfunction in the shoulder can be experienced in a number of ways. In an examination, shoulder issues would be characterized based on when and how pain is felt. Constant pain, or pain upon resting, is different than pain produced by specific movement. Pain can be felt as sharp, dull, stabbing, constant, acute and chronic. Limiting a specific movement to avoid pain can actually exacerbate symptoms rather than allow the muscles to rest. Pain isn't the only determiner of dysfunction; often times stiffness, instability, and weakness of the shoulder joint are red flags that the joint needs treatment. Additionally, a health care practitioner would check for local redness, numbness, and swelling to determine the problem.

One of the strongest correlations between shoulder pain and work is that of highly repetitive shoulder movement and shoulder tendonitis. Tendonitis commonly arises from overuse or degenerative wear and tear, both of which may happen with repetitive activity. This is not only a painful condition, but contributes to limited range of motion and shoulder instability. Other dysfunctions that may arise from work-related shoulder stress are frozen shoulder, bursitis, degenerative joint disease, impingement syndrome, and arthritis.

Anyone who has exercised knows that repetitive activity actually strengthens muscles and tendons. This is very fortunate; however, this can only happen when there is sufficient recovery time between activities. Recovery happens during rest. Rest can be accomplished by: changing activities to use different muscles, taking breaks, waiting longer between bouts of activity, or even incorporating ergonomic solutions that demand less repetition, static postures, or forces applied to the shoulder. Initiating smarter work habits now can not only reduce the risk of injury, but also give your body the time it needs to heal and reverse some of the negative effects already sustained.

Back Pain Due to Facet Joint Compression


The facet joints of the spine lock the vertebrae together, holding the spine erect but allowing a complex range of movements:


  • Flexion (bending forward)
  • Extension (bending backwards)
  • Bending from side to side
  • Rotation, clockwise or counter-clockwise

If the joints become compressed, the vertebrae no longer move freely and you become stiff and there is decreased flexibility of the spine.

If the cartilage which covers the surface of the facet joints becomes worn, you can no longer move your head or lower body smoothly and without pain. The stiffness gradually worsens and can lead to spinal osteoarthritis. Occasionally, to make up for the weakening joint, the body may begin to produce bone spurs, called osteophytes. These bone spurs worsen the problem, as they may project out from the facet joint, protruding into the spinal canal, pinching nerves.

If a bone spur projects from the facet joint and presses upon a disc, which is the tough cartilage cushion between each vertebrae, there can be trouble. The spur may cause the disc to bulge out into the spinal canal, pinching nerves, and often causing low back pain or sciatica symptoms. Sufficient pressure from the bone spur may even cause the disc to herniate.

Another cause of back pain can develop when the nerves of the spinal cord leave the vertebral column. First, it is necessary to understand the formation of the vertebrae. Each has a large opening in the center, called the foramen, through which the spinal cord runs. The vertebrae are stacked one on top of another to make up the spinal column. When two vertebrae are locked together by the facet joints, there is a small opening formed on the side of the spinal column. It is not present in a single vertebra and two are required to make a single opening. This is known as an intervertebral foramen and the nerves branching off the spinal cord exit the vertebral column through these holes. If the facet joints become compressed, the intervertebral foramen becomes smaller, reducing the space through which the nerves must exit. This leads to nerve root compression, known as impingement.

Tingling and numbness in affected extremities.

Once a diagnosis has been made, there are a variety of treatments to alleviate pain:


  • NSAIDS, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medication such as ibuprophen or naproxyn are helpful.
  • Physical therapy may improve mobility, range of motion, and strength.
  • Corticosteroid and local anesthetic may be injected into the joint to relieve inflammation.
  • Blocking the dorsal medial nerve branch that innervates the inflamed joint may be effective.
  • Fusion of the joint has been discussed but there are no published reports of this type3 of treatment.
  • New procedures for the surgical removal of bone spurs have been effective.

Patients need education about every aspect of this problem and should be informed of all treatment options. It is very important that they use good body mechanics to prevent worsening of their symptoms.

Most over the counter medicines will also help relieve the pain. Using cold water dunks is a very popular method for relieving pain. You can also flex your fingers back and forth to help loosen the muscles and tendons. You can also take a 15 second break while you are doing a repetitive task. This will help relax you finger joint and keep it from being strained. Carpal tunnel is reversible, and you should try to find a good exercise plan. Mild cases can be reversed in as little as two weeks, while more advanced cases could take over six weeks. Are Some Problems Not Detectable by Dental X-Rays?


Dental X-Rays are an important part of a dental health program, allowing dentists to detect tooth decay, abscesses, cysts, gum disease, bone loss, and root canal problems. There are several types of dental x-rays in use in North America. Most dental health problems can be detected by an x-ray; however, there are a few conditions that cannot be detected by an x-ray.

The bite-wing and periapical x-ray has been in use by dentists for decades. They give a close view of the teeth and the underlying root and bone supporting the teeth. They are most helpful in detecting decay on and between teeth. Newer are the panoramic x-rays, which give a whole-mouth view.

Panoramic x-rays will detect problems with the upper or lower jaw, the jaw joints, nasal sinuses and surrounding tissue, or the mandibular nerve. Oral cancer will not be detected with a bite-wing or periapical x-ray. The dentist is able to do a screening for oral cancer during a regular check-up, examining the cheeks, floor and roof of the mouth, and the surface and base of the tongue. Oral cancer will most often look like small lesions on any of those soft tissues.

Temporomandibular disorder (TMD or TMJ) is another condition that can be detected on a panoramic x-ray, but not the bite-wing or periapical. TMD is a condition related to the jaw. Often people suffering TMD hear a clicking or popping accompanied by pain when they open their mouths. It has many causes; arthritis, injury or stress. The muscles of the face often tense when we are under stress, and this pulls the muscles of the jaw taut, causing pain when using those muscles. TMD can also be a cause of headache or toothache. Sometimes it manifests as pain around the ear when chewing, neck, shoulder or back pain, or difficulty opening the mouth wide, or even dizziness.

Sinus problems can cause toothache, and will be visible on a panoramic x-ray. Your dentist will ask questions to help narrow down the cause of the pain, and avoid unnecessary dental treatment. Other oral conditions that will not be detected by x-ray are burning mouth or burning tongue, often caused by nutritional deficiencies, and facial neuralgia caused by damaged nerves to the face.

Bulimia experienced over a period of time can cause damage to the enamel of teeth because of the acids produced when purging. Oral infections such as mouth thrush will not show on an x-ray. Many of these conditions will be visible to the dentist while doing a routine exam, and a complete health history will be an important tool for the dentist when diagnosing problems in the mouth. Sometime tooth decay will not be seen on an x-ray, if it is on a surface at the back, tongue side of a tooth. Sometimes during scaling or root planing, a treatment for periodontal disease will reveal decay not visible on a routine x-ray.
