A Review Of What Happens To Your Joints When You Contract Arthritis

There are over one hundred different types of arthritis, and every type falls into one of two distinct categories: degenerative or inflammatory. The most prevalent type of degenerative arthritis by far is osteoarthritis, which accounts for about 80 per cent of all arthritis and affects tens of millions of people around the world. The most prevalent type of inflammatory arthritis is rheumatoid arthritis, which afflicts roughly one or two in one hundred people. If you have ever seen pictures of an active volcano, then you know how lava keeps spewing forth, spreading out beyond itself and forming land that was not there before. Think of the production of cartilage as you would a very slow lava flow. A layer of specialized cells called chondrocytes slowly secrete a particular cartilage gel. The cartilage gel is made up of two different types of materials. One is collagen, which is akin to strong "ropes" and provides the cartilage with its scaffolding. The other type of material in cartilage goes under the heading proteoglycans. These are little elasticized "springs" that connect the "ropes". They are crucial because they dam up water between them, providing the joint with elasticity and its ability to slide easily. Water also provides foolproof cushioning.

It can not be compressed, but it can easily be squeezed from place to place, which means it can even out the pressure in cartilage by flowing from an area of high pressure to an area of lower pressure. The process of distributing pressure throughout a joint works as follows: When you put a load on a joint, say, by walking or gripping something with your hand, muscles in the area move the bones, which in turn compress the cartilage. Specifically, it is the springs inside the cartilage that are compressing. This squeezes the water out from between the springs from the middle of the joint to the edges, which, in turn, allows the pressure of the movement to be evenly applied across the joint. After the movement is completed, the water flows back between the springs, ready for the next step or grip and with age, you lose some of the springs-and, therefore, some of the elasticity. The springs that remain, eventually become more brittle and less springy. In some people, the joint wear and tear of a lifetime leads to osteoarthritis; in others, it does not. It can not be predicted with certainty who will end up with osteoarthritis and who will not. But there are some risk factors that make a lot of people far more prone to developing the disease.

Joint Pains Treatment - Home and Ayurvedic Remedies

Pains in the joints are very common complaints as a person advances in years. More often than not, these joint pains are due to arthritis. There are several kinds of arthritis which may occur in old age. In all these types, the indication is that the joints have become worn down with age and so they are not attacking themselves. In this manner of speaking, joint pains are an autoimmune disease, i.e. one in which the body attacks itself.

The Ayurvedic name for arthritic joint pains is Sandhi Vata. As the name suggests, it is caused by vitiation of the vata dosha in the human body. The word sandhi means 'joint' in Sanskrit. Ayurveda believes that Sandhi Vata can be caused due to rheumatism, infections, gout, hemophilia, trauma and even due to digestive problems which result in a buildup of ama in the body.

4. Bishop's Weed (Trachyspermum ammi)

Oil extracted from the bishop's weed is applied locally on the affected joints to relieve pains in them.

5. Celery (Apium graveolens)

Celery can be used as an effective treatment for rheumatism and gout, both of which can cause pain in the joints. Thus, celery provides more lasting treatment from the problem. The alkaline content of celery makes it effective in treating joint pains.

6. Dandelion (Taraxacum officinale)

Dandelion is rich in magnesium, an element that is needed for the proper mineralization of the bones. Use of dandelion makes the bones stronger and protects them from pains.

7. Garlic (Allium sativum)

Garlic is a very effective remedy for the treatment of joint pains. About five to six cloves of garlic must be eaten every morning to seek relief.

8. Ginger (Zingiber officinale)

Ginger is also one of the best methods in the treatment of joint pains. It must be included freely in the daily diet of the person. Tea made with ginger in it is also beneficial.

(2) Dietary Treatments for Joint Pains

Ginger and garlic are extremely good for controlling joint pains. Some people find the odor of ginger intolerable. In order to reduce the odor, the cloves of garlic could be slightly fried in butter. All bitter tastes are good for arthritis. Hence, people could consume bitter gourd and bitter drumsticks without any worry.

People with joint pains should totally steer away from all kinds of sour foods, since these can increase the vata. Constipation can aggravate the pains. Hence foods that are difficult to digest must be avoided. This also extends to protein-rich foods such as pulses. Foods must not be fried so as not to vitiate the vata further.

(3) Ayurvedic Treatments for Joint Pains

Ayurveda prescribed different kinds of treatments for different kinds of joint pains. When a patient approaches an Ayurvedic doctor, the first thing to do is to ascertain the cause of the pain. Depending on that, the medicines are prescribed.

1. Rheumatic arthritis is known as Ama Vata in Ayurveda. It is caused due to a low digestive fire, due to which ama is retained in the body. For its treatment, first the ama is removed by fasting and purgation if needed. Then a mixture of punarnava, guggulu, galangala and garlic is administered in dosages of one gram per day. Dashamoolarishta is also prescribed in 15 milliliters quantity thrice a day for three weeks.

2. If the joint pain is due to trauma, then Vishagarbha taila is prescribed for external application over the region where the joint pain is felt. For internal administration, the patient is prescribed Rasnadi Guggulu and Guduchi tablets, which are to be taken in a quantity of 250 milligrams thrice or four times a day with water.

3. In people with age above fifty years, a type of arthritic joint pains known as osteoarthritis is observed. This is known as Ashtigata Vata in Sanskrit. For this condition, either Pravala Panchamrita or Lakshadi Guggulu is prescribed. The dosages are 125 milligrams twice a day for one month and 250 milligrams thrice a day for three months respectively.

(4) Home Remedies for Joint Pains

a. Massage the joints with a mixture of camphor, eucalyptus oil and menthol before going to bed.

b. Have a glass of carrot juice early in the morning. Continue this till you find reduction in the pains, which should happen within a week.

c. Do not exercise wildly, but at the same time do not keep your joints lethargic. Perform some activity with them so as to keep them mobile.

d. Have a bath with warm water every morning. This facilitates proper blood circulation.

7 Ways of Dealing With Hip Pain Without Surgery

1. Hip Specific Exercises - Hip pain can often be relieved or even eliminated completely with specific exercise routines designed to treat this particular problem. Pain in any of your joints may be an indication that the surrounding muscles are under unbearable strain. Being overweight, sitting improperly with poor posture, and a diet poor in nutrients but high in fat, calories, and sugars all contribute to pain in your joints. Exercise helps relieve this pain by strengthening the affected muscles, and improving your mental outlook.

2. Massage Therapy or Muscle Manipulation - Muscle manipulation or massage can help to eliminate pain in your joints and muscles, and also help you to relax at the same time which diminishes the pain sensations some. When your muscles and nerves are under constant tension or stay tightened up for long periods of time this can cause pain. Having a massage on a regular basis can keep your muscles relaxed and loose, and this can also be done with muscle manipulation in your hip area.

3. Biofeedback - Biofeedback has proven very effective with some people at stopping hip pain without the need for surgery. This method must be learned, and is not something that you can do on the spur of the moment. If you are willing to take the time and put in the effort to learn this method you could get considerable pain relief without drugs or invasive methods.

4. Ice and Heat Packs and Ointments - Joint pain can often benefit from either ice or heat. There are a number of ointments and patches available that can apply either ice, heat, or both to your hip joint and help to relieve pain. Some of these products alternate between a cooling sensation and heat for the best relief. These will also help relax your muscles surrounding the affected joint, which can also contribute to pain in the area.

5. Meditation - If you suffer from hip pain, or any other type of pain, then meditation can be an effective tool you can use to minimize this pain. With meditation you learn to focus and clear your mind. You will be able to minimize the discomfort you feel by focusing on other aspects instead, and clear all of the previous pain from your thoughts. Chronic pain can be devastating both physically and psychologically, and meditation can help with both of these aspects.

6. Electrotherapy - Electrotherapy can help relieve pain that affects muscles and joints. In this treatment you will receive a low dose of electricity, which will stimulate your nerve endings and cause the pain to be eliminated. Some patients swear by this method, while others may not get the best results. Some patients find the treatment a little unsettling, but it is not painful and can be a big help in stopping chronic pain before surgery is required.

7. Physical Therapy - For hip pain that is chronic or severe your doctor may prescribe physical therapy. During this treatment a combination of approaches and treatment methods are used to find out which ones work best for you. Your physical therapist will customize a treatment plan designed to eliminate your pain using exercise, relaxation techniques, whirlpool soaks, and other methods.

Sports Injury Pain Relief With Natural Eggshell Membrane

If connective tissue damage is keeping you from participating in the sports you love, Natural Eggshell Membrane (NEM) may be the key to getting you back out on the field. Connective tissue damage is common in sports injuries, strains and sprains. This kind of damage manifests as muscle stiffness, aches and the loss of flexibility. These symptoms are commonly overlooked as a part of the natural aging process or simply as normal effects of being active. But joint pain, muscle aches and loss of flexibility can signal connective tissue damage, which if left untreated can result in keeping you out of the game permanently.

Treatment and repair of damaged tissue is a complicated process that hinges on controlling inflammation to allow your body to begin repairing tissue. Inflammation can be treated using over the counter medications, vitamin C and Zinc, and other non-prescription treatment options. If inflammation isn't controlled, then the processes necessary to help repair tissue damage cannot take place. Connective tissue repair is actually a two part process that consists of first addressing inflammation and second, providing the necessary nutrients and tools to your body to begin the repair process.

It is the repair process that can be most helped by NEM. Natural eggshell membrane can help repair connective tissue damage and relieve joint and muscle pain. NEM is the thin membrane between the eggshell and egg white. NEM contains the proteins that are necessary to help repair connective tissue damage.

If you want to get back in the game, a daily supplement containing NEM may be able to help. Supplements that contain natural eggshell membrane are effective, because they contain a high level of NEM. Natural eggshell membrane not only helps repair tissue damage, but it also works to maintain the synovial fluid necessary to keep your joints and tissue healthy. Synovial fluid is located in your joints and helps keep them lubricated so your movements are smooth and painless.

Arthritis Diagnosis and Treatment in Austin

Arthritis is a common, and sometimes debilitating, disorder that affects many people worldwide, and is also the leading cause of disability in the United States. Over 20 million people who are afflicted with the condition suffer from severe and daily functional limitations, and even these only account for a fraction of the number of individuals who have arthritis on the whole. Its severity varies from person to person, and it can have any number of causes-but the thing that all cases of arthritis have in common is that they cause difficulty and often pain in the individual's joints.

Arthritis occurs when one or more joints in a person's body become inflamed, potentially leading to numerous other complications. There are over 100 different varieties of this disorder, but the most common form by far is osteoarthritis (also called degenerative arthritis or degenerative joint disease). This variation of the condition involves severe degradation of parts of the joints, such as the subchondral tissue of the epiphysis and the articular cartilage, which covers the surface of the bone and allows for smooth bending and flexing. When a person is stricken with osteoarthritis, the cartilage that layers the bone tissue grows incredibly thin so that when the joints move bone tissue is ground against bone tissue. This increased traction causes victims of osteoarthritis a lot of pain, and results in severe stiffness of the joints. For the most part, this form of arthritis is not the result of any kind of disease-rather osteoarthritis can be seen as a sign of excessive wear, as it mostly affects joints that have been exposed to unhealthily large amounts of stress. Rheumatoid arthritis is another common form which occurs when the immune system begins to attack the body's own tissue for unknown reasons.

Other variations of arthritis may be side-effects of other illnesses, such as Lyme disease, inflammatory bowel disease, and hepatitis. Some forms of the condition may also affect parts of the body other than just the bones, inducing symptoms like weight loss and fever-in some cases, it's possible that the internal organs will also face complication. Naturally, since arthritis limits a person's movement, it is also common for secondary symptoms related to decreased physical fitness to occur; someone with arthritis will most likely be much less flexible than the average person, and their muscle endurance may also suffer.

Unfortunately, there is currently no known cure for rheumatoid arthritis or osteoarthritis. However, there are a number of treatments that can help ease some of the symptoms. The most common method of dealing with the issue is arthroplasty; a form of orthopedic surgery where the surface of the joint is either replaced so as to stop the bones from rubbing together, or remodeled/realigned by means of some other type of procedure. For those who live in Austin, arthritis can be treated by visiting any of various clinics and specialists in the area.
